Recent tasting of Pontet Canet from 2013 back to 2008. Stand out vintages we're 2009 and 2010 both scoring 100 points with most of the top wine critics. 2009 is drinking better at this time, showing great complexity with the start of some secondary flavours. 2010 is just a monster, not showing anything except direct fruit, this is a very long term wine that will need at least another 10 years before anything starts to happen. Very interesting to see weak and strong vintages together, they all drank well but the 13,12 and 11 are well on their way to maturity, they still have many years ahead of them but will not ever be exceptional. I think that most consumers really do not understand how weather conditions really change the character of these wines.

A recent tasting of the wines of Peter Sisseck. We tasted. Psi 2023 Psi 2022 Psi 2010 Flor de Pingus 2023 Flor de Pingus 2013 Flor de Pingus 2012 Chateau Rocheyron 2019 Chateau Rocheyron 2016 Chateau Rocheyron 2012 I always love doing vertical tastings, you learn as much from the difficult vintages as you do from the great vintages. The two outstanding wines were the Flor de Pingus 2012 and the Psi 2010, the most disappointing of the night was the Chateau Rocheyron 2012.

Vines del Cambrico Rufete Blanco Granito 2017. I bought this from the UK importer as a bin end, at 9 years I thought that it was a bit of a risk. Just shows that it is always worth the risk, even though it was showing age it is drinking really well. A project by Fernando Maillo in his local area of Sierra de Salmanca, the idea to show how great these often forgotten ancient varieties show in the modern world. It has good body with herby elements and great acidity with a touch of spice. So nice to drink these unusual white wines in a world of boring Sauvignon Blanc. Overall worth seeking out even though there is no UK importer anymore.

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2012. Most wine people will probably say that Grand Cru Burgundy is where the greatest wines of the world come from but, I think that Eiswein from the great German estates are if not better it is a very close run thing. The thing here is age, Burgundy do need time to develope those fantastic secondary elements that wine people crave, in Burgundy that may be 15, 29 or 30 years unfortunately for mere mortals Eiswein can take a lot longer. The other problem is the weather, as the world warms most traditional wine areas are needing to adapt but for Eiswein time may not be on its side. Generally Eiswein needs to have completed its cycle of growth and decay and hopefully have been attacked by a friendly rot and if that is not enough stay frozen long enough to be made into one of the most magical products on earth. Donnhoff are one of the handful of great estates in Germany that can manage this. We are discounting Canada because even though there wines are good they are not at this level. So, If you can go and buy as much German Eiswein as possible before it disappears for ever.
