Wines from Marlborough

Marlborough made New Zealand's name with Sauvignon Blanc, and the best examples have a freshness that's hard to beat. But there's more here than the famous style: wild-ferment Sauvignons with real depth, and Riesling worth seeking out. I've picked the bottles that rise above the crowd.

About Marlborough

Marlborough did something no region had managed before: it made a grape variety instantly recognisable to people who do not otherwise think about wine. That success is also its problem, since the pungent style is now made to a formula by some.

The growers here who take it seriously produce Sauvignon Blanc with real texture, and quietly excellent Pinot Noir and Riesling that live in its shadow.
