Hawke's Bay, on the sunny east coast of New Zealand's North Island, is the country's great home of red wine beyond Pinot Noir. Its warm, stony soils, especially the famous Gimblett Gravels, ripen Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet to a polish few southern-hemisphere regions can match, while its Chardonnay is quietly world-class.
