Passopisciaro was founded around the turn of the millennium by Andrea Franchetti, one of the people who saw early what Mount Etna's high, black-soiled slopes could give, and he helped spark the volcano's wine renaissance. The vineyards sit at serious altitude on the northern face of the mountain, and many of them are planted with old Nerello Mascalese.

That old Nerello Mascalese, drawn from across the mountain's contrade, is the heart of the estate. The wines are pale in colour but intense in flavour, and they are often compared to fine Burgundy with a volcanic accent. This is Etna at its most compelling.
