About Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo

Etna, Italy

The Scammacca del Murgo family have farmed Tenuta San Michele, on the eastern slope of Mount Etna at Santa Venerina, since 1860. The modern wine estate is the work of Baron Emanuele, who came home after a long career as an Italian diplomat and turned the old family land over to serious winemaking; the first bottle of Murgo Etna Rosso, from the 1980 vintage, was filled and labelled by hand in 1981.

His sons run things today. Etna's altitude and dark volcanic soils give the native grapes, Nerello Mascalese in the reds and Carricante in the whites, a freshness and mineral cut that sets the mountain apart from the rest of Sicily. Both our Etna Bianco and Etna Rosso come from here.
