About Cantina di Nizza
Piedmont, Italy
Cantina di Nizza is a co-operative founded in 1955 by growers around the town of Nizza Monferrato, in the southern Asti hills of Piedmont. Its 200 members farm around 550 hectares and the focus is firmly on Barbera, the grape variety that thrives on these clay-rich soils.
Barbera d'Asti gets overshadowed by Barolo and Barbaresco, but this cellar is a reminder of what good co-operative winemaking can achieve: ripe dark cherry fruit, lively acidity, and a savoury freshness that makes it one of the more honest and versatile Italian reds around.
