Monterustico Dogliani 2023
From £24.95
Why Mark chose this
This is a project by the Vaira family, who run the excellent G.D. Vajra estate in Barolo, aimed at restoring the reputation of Dogliani's Dolcetto. That might sound like a modest ambition, but Dolcetto from Dogliani at its best is something genuinely lovely: deep violet colour, purple flowers and dark cherry, soft tannins and a thirst-quenching freshness that makes it brilliant with food. At this price it's one of the most enjoyable bottles on the list.

Tasting Notes
Monterustico is an exciting attempt by the Vaira family to revitalise the denomination of Dogliani, which was, 30 years ago, more sought after than Barolo. Situated on the southern Langhe hills, about 16 kilometres south of Barolo, it is known for producing outstanding Dolcetto grown on clay/marl soils derived from the ‘formazioni di Lequio’. Beautiful deep violet purple color. Notes of purple flowers and fruits, violet, raspberries and dark cherries, delicate whiffles of mint and balsamic tones all lend tons of lift to the wine. Refreshing and thirst-quenching palate, velvety tannins, with a juicy finish that recalls the nose of red fruits.
