Franz Haas

The Haas family has been farming in Montagna, in the Bolzano province of Alto Adige, for generations. Franz, who trained at Geisenheim and spent time in the German wine trade before returning home, was the one who turned the family's grapes into bottled wines of real quality. He died in 2022, and the estate continues under the family's stewardship.

Alto Adige sits in the mountains on the Austrian border, and the variety mix here reflects that: Gewurztraminer, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, and others that find this Alpine setting a natural home. The Gewurztraminer is one of the benchmarks for the variety in Italy, all rose petal and lychee with the freshness that altitude provides, while the Pinot Bianco is quieter but equally precise.
