Wieninger

Fritz Wieninger is one of the people most responsible for taking Vienna's wines seriously again. Wiener Gemischter Satz, the traditional Viennese field blend of multiple white varieties grown and harvested together, was an everyday local wine for centuries before it fell out of fashion. Wieninger has been at the front of the effort to restore its reputation.

The wines come from vineyards on the hills north and west of the city, blending varieties including Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay among others, and the result has a complexity and texture that a single-variety wine rarely manages. Vienna is one of the only capital cities with a serious wine-producing tradition within its boundaries, and Wieninger is the name to know.
