F X Pichler Loibner Ried Klostersatz Gruner Veltliner 2022
£38.95
Why Mark chose this
FX Pichler is one of the defining names of the Wachau, and the Klostersatz vineyard on south-facing slopes above the Danube is one of his most prized sites. Grüner Veltliner from here is a completely different proposition from the lighter, more commercial styles, with great concentration, mineral depth and the characteristic white pepper freshness that the grape does so well. This is the kind of bottle that makes Grüner Veltliner fans very happy, and might well convert those who aren't yet.

Tasting Notes
The Ried Klostersatz is one of the oldest vineyards in Wachau to be cultivated by the Bavarian and Salzburg monasteries, The vineyard is situated on south, south-west facing slopes at 200 metres altitude in the Loibner basin, within the dramatic curve of the Danube River between Dürnstein and Oberloiben. This results in excellent sun exposure. The remarkably deep soil composition, made of shallow sandy topsoil and underlying gravel and pebble soils, provides the vines with drainage and heat retention. This encourage the grapes to ripen gradually, resulting in the development of complex aromatics.
