Why Mark chose this

San Leonardo is a historic estate in Trentino with an extraordinary story: they thought they were growing Cabernet Franc until the late 1980s, when Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga finally confirmed the vines were actually Carmenère, a variety planted by his ancestor in the 19th century. What followed was years of experimentation to master it. The result is something genuinely rare, a single-variety Carmenère from Trentino made with Bordeaux-level care and precision.

Tasting Notes

The Carmenère from San Leonardo is surely the old- est grape variety cultivated on the estate. It was in- troduced thanks to Oddone de Gresti’s passion for international varieties, who planted it at the end of the 19th century. For years, it was mistaken for Cab- ernet Franc, until Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, in the late 1980s, planted new Cabernet Franc vines for comparison and realized he had this particular, nearly forgotten variety. Following years of extensive experimentation, it became “the essence of San Leon- ardo”. Carmenère gives personality to all red wines produced on the estate.
