The Carmenère from San Leonardo is surely the old- est grape variety cultivated on the estate. It was in- troduced thanks to Oddone de Gresti’s passion for international varieties, who planted it at the end of the 19th century. For years, it was mistaken for Cab- ernet Franc, until Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, in the late 1980s, planted new Cabernet Franc vines for comparison and realized he had this particular, nearly forgotten variety. Following years of extensive experimentation, it became “the essence of San Leon- ardo”. Carmenère gives personality to all red wines produced on the estate.
