Burn Cottage Moonlight Race 2021
From £50.95
Why Mark chose this
Burn Cottage is one of Central Otago's finest estates, farmed biodynamically on a north-facing hillside above Lowburn. Winemaker Ted Lemon of Littorai in Sonoma advises them, which tells you the level of ambition. Moonlight Race is their second label, but there's nothing second-rate about it: perfumed, detailed Pinot Noir with real finesse. If you want to see what the fuss over Central Otago Pinot is about, this is the bottle to open.

Tasting Notes
Burn Cottage refers to the name of the road on which this 28-hectare property sits in Lowburn, Central Otago. The estate was once a sheep paddock until it was purchased by Marquis Sauvage in 2002. Marquis enlisted Ted Lemon of Sonoma Coast’s famous Littorai as their winemaker and together they decided to plant Pinot Noir in 2003. The 2020 vintage saw cool temperatures early in the season, with regular rainfall in November and December resulting in an extended flowering period. Temperatures rose in the summer months with some cooler days and nights. This diurnal range enabled the fruit to benefit from a slow ripening season, preserving balance and acidity in the grapes. On the nose, there are vivid notes of cherry, florals and pepper with a savoury complexity. There is an elegant and concentrated core supported by supple texture, and fine tannins extending through the palate.
