Domaine Claude Dugat
Domaine Claude Dugat is based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the largest and best known of the red wine villages of the Côte de Nuits, at the northern end of Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Gevrey is unusual even by Burgundian standards: the commune holds twenty-six premier cru climats and nine grand cru appellations, more grands crus than any other village in Burgundy, including Chambertin itself and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.
The Dugats are a Gevrey family, and the domaine holds vines in grands crus including Griotte-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. It is worth understanding what that means in practice. Griotte-Chambertin is one single climat, En Griotte, and the whole appellation covers less than three hectares, shared between around nine growers. A domaine's slice of that is measured in rows, and the annual production is measured in a few hundred bottles. These are among the rarest and most expensive red wines made anywhere, and they are not sold on allocation so much as rationed.
The domaine is small, family-run and hands-on, and it works across the full ladder of Gevrey appellations: a Bourgogne Rouge at the bottom, then Gevrey-Chambertin village, then premier cru sites including Lavaux Saint-Jacques, and then the grands crus at the top. Everything comes off the same handful of hectares and is made in the same cellar by the same hands, which is why the reputation of the grands crus tends to pull the whole range up with it.
The domaine's Bourgogne Rouge is worth understanding for what it is and what it is not. Bourgogne Rouge is the regional appellation, the humblest wine a Gevrey domaine makes, and from most growers it is an everyday bottle. What makes this one different is not the appellation. It is the fact that a domaine whose grand cru bottles change hands for four figures makes it in the same cellar, to the same standards and in tiny quantities. That is a real thing, and it is priced accordingly, so it is best thought of as a fine wine purchase rather than a value one.
