Umani Ronchi is the benchmark producer for Verdicchio, and Casal di Serra is their most popular wine, made from vines at 200 to 350 metres in the hills behind Ancona. Verdicchio is an underrated grape that deserves more attention: dry, with a natural freshness, good body and that slight bitterness on the finish that makes it brilliant with food. This is the version to start with if you've never tried the variety.
The vineyards, which are between eight and thirty years old and trained on the Guyot system, are situated on the band of hillside between 200 and 350 meters above sea level, on opposite sides of the Esino valley. The soils go back to pleiocene-pleistocene formations, and are characterised by being very deep, medium-calcareous clay loams. To the palate it’s rich and velvety with a good dose of freshness and sapidity to balance the great softness. Dry finish, persistent and intensely fruity.
