Pure Garnacha is unusual in Rioja, where Tempranillo dominates, but Valpiedra is a relatively small estate in the Rioja Alta that takes grape-specific wines seriously. This 100% Garnacha, aged 12 months in French oak, is more structured and less jammy than Garnacha from Aragón or the southern Rhône, with a ruby freshness and cassis character that makes it distinctive. A good bottle for someone who wants to explore what Rioja can do beyond Tempranillo.
Petra de Valpiedra (D.O.Ca. Rioja), a limited edition of 100% Garnacha. This is a Rioja wine aged for 12 months in French oak barrels that give it a ruby color, with aromas ranging from red fruits to cassis, and an intense, fresh flavor with a silky finish.
