Red
Valdemar Balcon De Pilatos Maturana 2022
From £42.95
Why Mark chose this
Maturana Tinta is a grape that virtually disappeared from Rioja during the phylloxera crisis and was only rediscovered in the 1990s. Valdemar tracked down old strains and replanted, and this is the result: a genuinely unusual Rioja with a violet fragrance that is distinct from Tempranillo, with good depth and freshness. The 2017 is drinking very well now, and it's the kind of wine people remember.

Tasting Notes
Balcón de Pilatos is one of our most iconic vineyards and is a prime site for growing a very distinctive, violet-scented Maturana, a grape variety that was lost in Rioja due to phylloxera during 1920-30. This exclusive and minority grape was rediscovered in 35 strains found in a vineyard over 100 years old. Lively and rich cherry color. It is complex and powerful with notes of ripe black fruit and spices such as cocoa and vanilla as well as aromas of almond and cedar blossom. Smooth, savory, and chocolatey with fine tannins and a subtle cassis finish.
