A 2012 Rioja Reserva at this price is genuinely good value. Twelve years old, properly aged in the traditional style, and still going strong. Valdemar is a reliable estate in the Alavesa, and this is a textbook example of mature Rioja: red and black fruit, dried spices, a touch of leather and that satisfying savoury edge that comes from time in oak and bottle. The tannins have softened nicely. It's ready to drink now and very comfortable with food.
