Karavitakis

Karavitakis is a family winery on the western tip of Crete, near Chania, founded by Manolis Karavitakis with a focus on indigenous Cretan varieties. Vilana and Vidiano are two of the grapes they work with and are rarely seen outside the island: Vilana provides lighter, aromatic freshness while Vidiano adds weight and texture.

Crete has a long winemaking history but its modern wine scene has only begun to attract wider attention in the last decade or so. Producers like Karavitakis, working with local grapes rather than international varieties, are part of the reason that attention is well deserved.
