  Once, Tbilvino was the largest wine company in the Soviet Union. Much has changed since the fall of the Iron Curtain. In the early 90's by the entrepreneurial brothers Giorgi and Zura Margvelashvili bought the winery with the help from the World Bank. They had very different plans: to give the wines their typical Georgian identity back and to produce quality instead of quantity.

  Vilana and Vidiano are both indigenous Cretan white grapes, rarely seen outside Greece. Karavitakis is a family winery on the island making honest, food-friendly wine from local varieties that deserve a wider audience.   Soto Manrique make their wine in Sierra de Gredos, the granite mountain range west of Madrid that has become one of the most exciting areas in Spain for Garnacha. La Transición is their everyday bottling, and at this price it over-delivers: light, fragrant and genuinely refreshing, more like a good village Burgundy than the big, alcoholic Garnacha of the south. Keep a few bottles in and you'll reach for them regularly.

  Smooth and easy, with red and black fruit, gentle oak and a dry, clean finish

  Promesa's Crianza offers the traditional Rioja combination of Tempranillo, some barrel ageing and a bit of time in bottle, at a price that makes it easy to recommend without thinking too hard. It is a warm, smooth, quietly satisfying red that sits well with food and does not ask too much of you. A good bottle to keep several of.

  Cantina di Nizza Le Pole Barbera d'Asti 2024

  Medium-full, fruity and smooth, with cherry, blackcurrant and soft tannins

  Barbera d'Asti is one of Italy's most food-friendly reds, and this co-operative from Nizza Monferrato makes a very honest version of it. In Asti the best vineyard land goes to Barbera rather than Nebbiolo, so the grape is taken seriously here. Bright cherry fruit, good body and smooth tannins, at a price that means you can open it on a Tuesday.
