  Drappier is a family-run Champagne house based in Urville in the Côte des Bar, and they are one of the most consistent producers at this price level. This Premier Cru Brut is Pinot Noir-dominant, which gives it more body and red fruit character than most non-vintage Champagnes. It's got good depth, a fine mousse and enough richness to go with food as well as work as an aperitif. A reliable bottle to keep in the house.

  White Saint-Joseph is overlooked next to the reds, which is a pity because Marsanne from these granite slopes has a lovely character: mineral and almost floral on the nose, with a round, textured palate that develops well in the bottle. Ferraton are a solid, established name in the northern Rhône and this is a well-made, food-friendly white at a fair price.

  Priorat makes some of the most concentrated red wine in Spain, and Mas La Mola has been in the same family for a hundred and fifty years. Vi d'Altura is made from high-altitude Garnacha in the llicorella slate soils that define the appellation, and the result is a wine with serious depth and a long, mineral finish. Priorat at this level is never cheap, but this is one of the more reasonable bottles from the region.

  Rich and opulent.

  The state-of-the-art Sandeman winery, built in 2007, is at the beautiful Quinta do Seixo, situated on the south bank of the Douro, just downstream from Pinhão. The winery is perched on top of a hill, surrounded by vast terraces of vines, some of which are over 100 years old. Quinta do Seixo comprises 108 hectares, 71 of which are planted under vine. Many plots here boast the highest ‘A’ classification under the ‘Cadastro’ (or ‘vineyard register’) system, which ranks the quality of Douro vineyards based on 12 parameters, including locality, elevations, yield, soil type, grape variety, and vine training, age and density.
